Ceramic
serving dishes and tableware for a modern world of food, entertaining
and elegance
Enter the world of Moi Dugan's pottery and treat yourself to a visual
and tactile feast. Painter and potter intertwined, the artist embellishes
the simplest of functional forms with layers of color, carving and sgraffito
to create the fluidity of a wet painting on pottery.
Wheel thrown
and slipcast earthenware comprise the canvas for this pottery. Liquid
slips colored with stains and oxides are painted onto the clay in its
wet form. When the initial painting is complete, a variety of tools are
utilized to carve into and accentuate the design. This sgraffito adds
a textured layer to each piece thatcreates an enchantment of the senses.
After the pots have thoroughly dried and have been bisque fired, clear
and colored glazes are applied. Fired a second time to nearly 2000°
f in an oxidized atmosphere, the pieces are slowly cooled. The opening
of the kiln reveals the rich colors of the clay, slip and glaze...luscious
red tomatoes and chili peppers on pasta bowls, mermaids and divers swim
around lidded jars, vividly sculpted cityscapes rise out from under arches
of teapot handles and fish smile up from their watery depths.
Visually exciting
as decorative and functional pieces of art, these pieces are durable enough
to withstand, as well as beg, for everyday use, but also make their place
in an elegant, occasional setting.
